Marlborough Kindergarten Association

About the Association

Marlborough Kindergarten Association (MKA) is a non-profit community based organisation governed by an elected Board. We deliver on the collective strength of seven individual kindergartens, and one Early Learning Centre, in the Marlborough area and all funding received goes directly to providing high-quality early childhood education.

MKA belongs to the national organisation New Zealand Kindergartens with whom we network and share national expertise.

Our vision: To be leaders in early childhood learning, supporting our tamariki to meet their full potential, while instilling a life-long passion for learning.

Whānaungatanga: We value all relationships

Kaitiakitanga: We value the world around us and its future

Manaakitanga: We value integrity, trust, sincerity and equity

Ako: We value everyone as a learner

Wānanga: We value communication, problem solving and innovation

Our Structure

The Marlborough Kindergarten Association Board oversees the strategic direction and purpose of the Association.

The Association employs a General Manager who is delegated responsibility for the day to day management of the Association, as well as a Senior Teacher who oversees all our teaching staff.

Each centre has a head teacher and teachers whose responsibility is to ensure that they deliver teaching and learning that reflect the principles and strands of the curriculum document – Te Whāriki and is responsive to the community they are a part of.

Our History

The official opening of Blenheim’s first kindergarten was held on June 10, 1949, in Seymour Street, although the first official meeting of the Kindergarten Association was in 1941. The original kindergarten building was housed in a converted canteen building from the Air Force base at Omaka.

Since then the Kindergarten Association has grown steadily and we now have seven kindergartens in Marlborough, which are a mix of Government, Council and MKA owned properties, and one Early Learning Centre.
